Bodyguard AU

North exited the shower and scrubbed a towels over his scalp. He was on a tight schedule today and if he didn't get ready soon he knew his bodyguard would come knocking to get on his case about his tardiness. Still, he pulled on his clothes a bit slowly, savoring this time he had to himself.

Things had changed a lot since he'd gone pro. Basketball players were paid a lot of money and even though they were tough and athletic, their continued physical fitness was considered a financial asset. So the risk that something might happen during his interactions with fans—or, more precisely, other teams' fans—was not one that the owners of his team wanted to take.

He'd only been under this restriction for a couple of days, so it was something he had yet to get used to. He knew it would come with time, especially as the two of them got to know one another. In any case, now that he was dressed it was time to get going. He left the bathroom and went into the main part of his hotel room. Soon enough it would be time to roll.

High School AU

[Orion was usually a little more extroverted and outspoken, but as a transfer student he found he had more of a hesitance with this unknown group of peers, choosing to observe rather than engage throughout his classes while he tried to figure out some sort of footing in this new school.]

[And as a casual observer, it wasn't really like any other school, except for her. She was hard to miss, really. Vivacious, happy, and with a long shock of bright pink hair. When she'd passed his locker in the hallway, or stood a few people ahead of him in the lunch line, he couldn't help but stare. That was the kind of person he wished he was friends with, but he found himself shy to the prospects of breaking the ice.]

20 MERCENARY AU BC CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP

Irritation had been how it'd all began, a distinct sense of dislike and disapproval for the fact that the current client had insisted on multiple assignments this time. One and done, that was how it was supposed to be, go in, cause hell, get out, collect paycheck and repeat ad nauseum. Simple in theory, less so in practice, but it was a life that was, at the very least, profitable and simple enough. No need to worry about the morality of anything, the simple black and white of 'do this thing because you're getting paid for it' was enough. Had always been enough.

Irritation had given way to anger, though, when it was revealed that the job wasn't for a single operative, but two. That wasn't the way things worked; people hired 'Maine' (there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't regret the moniker, cursed younger him for deciding on it) to act as shock and awe, not to play backup to someone else. Oh there had been fury, bravado and posturing and threats, but that hadn't changed a single thing. If the pay hadn't been so tempting, he would have most certainly walked.

And perhaps it was for the best that he hadn't, because the woman that he was assigned (forced, if he was being honest with himself) to work in tandem with was, at the very least, interesting. Not what he would have expected, though that wasn't saying much because he'd expected so little, but at the very least competent while on the job. He hadn't made a point to get to know her during down times.

Competent enough that eventually he'd found his eyes wandering, even through hails of bullet fire, because there was something almost artistic in the way her sword was nearly an extension of herself. Intriguing, and he'd have to begrudgingly admit that it was impressive. But also who the fuck used swords anymore?

Eventually it settled on frustration, though. Frustration at the fact that yes, she was skilled enough to keep up with him. Frustration that she might have been better than him. And most certainly frustration over the fact that it was far too appealing to watch her wade through any opposition, covered in gore and grinning.

What the fuck.

He'd been surly all day, and the fact that they were now stuck waiting, camped out inside a warehouse that they'd been sent to ultimately burn down, hadn't helped anything. And if he'd been staring at her in the quiet, it was simply because of that fact anyways; boredom, he'd take that lie to his grave.
